Evaluating Interactive Music Systems: An HCI Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we discuss a number of issues related to the design of evaluation tests for comparing interactive music systems for improvisation. Our testing procedure covers rehearsal and performance environments, and captures the experiences of a musician/participant as well as an audience member/observer. We attempt to isolate salient components of system behavior, and test whether the musician or audience are able to discern between systems with significantly different behavioral components. We have applied our testing methodology in comparative studies of our London and ARHS improvisation systems [1], with the help of saxophonists John Butcher and James Fei; we report on preliminary experiences and ongoing design refinements.

متن کاملDesigning Interactive Music Systems: A Pattern Approach
Music is a structurally very complex type of multimedia information. Today, computer systems easily play back music in high quality, but an ideal system should offer many more, media-appropriate ways to interact with musical data. Users should be able to hum a melody to locate the tune they want, then conduct it, or play to it with adjustable computer support, alone or with others via the Inter...
متن کاملImplicit Physiological Interaction for the Generation of Affective Musical sounds
Music is well known for affecting human emotional states, yet the relationship between specific musical parameters and emotional responses is still not clear. With the advent of new human-computer interaction (HCI) technologies, it is now possible to derive emotion-related information from physiological data and use it as an input to interactive music systems. This raises the question of how mu...
متن کاملMARPLE investigates: an 'adversarial' approach to evaluating user experience
User experience of interactive systems has always been difficult to assess due to its subjective nature. In this paper we present a new approach to the evaluation of pleasure as an aspect of user experience. This multi-lateral approach, entitled MARPLE, is based upon an adversarial courtroom metaphor.
متن کاملImprovisation without Representation Artificial Intelligence and Music
The title is meant in two senses: both as a reference to the fact that contemporary freely improvised music is underrepresented in the study of AI and music; and, as a reference to the behavioral robotics research of Rodney Brooks, who famously stated that in place of computational representation, “the world is its own best model”. Brooks cites the theoretical work of Marvin Minsky as a source ...
